Dr. Adnan Alseidi to Join Faculty and Named Inaugural Vice Chair for Education
The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce that Adnan Alseidi, MD EdM FACS has been named the inaugural Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Surgery, effective April 1, 2020. As Vice Chair, Dr. Alseidi will work collaboratively with our educators and teachers to strengthen the Department’s educational enterprise, including our residencies, fellowships, the Surgical Skills Center, and medical student clerkships and integration into the pre-clinical years. In addition, Dr. Alseidi will work closely with the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and the Vice Chair for Research to strengthen faculty mentorship of learners.
Dr. Alseidi attended medical school at Pennsylvania State University and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He then served as a general/trauma/thoracic surgeon in the US Navy and as Co-director of the Surgery Department at the US Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan. Dr. Alseidi completed a HPB and advanced GI fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, MO and earned a master’s degree in surgical education at Southern Illinois University/University of Illinois-UC.
Dr. Alseidi is currently an attending surgeon on the HPB and Endocrine Surgery Service in the Department of Surgery at the Virginia Mason Medical Center (VMMC). At VMMC, he is the Director of the Clinical HPB Fellowship program, Surgical Simulation Training, and Associate Program Director of the general surgery residency. Nationally, Dr. Alseidi has held multiple leadership positions, including serving as the Vice President of the Association of Surgical Education, 2nd Vice President for the Fellowship Council, and is a member of multiple education and leadership committees within SAGES, AHPBA, and ACS.
Dr. Alseidi’s research interests include global assessment of psychomotor skills, linkages between surgical education and patient outcomes, complex MIS training, and surgical performance improvement. His clinical interests are in expanding surgical therapies for patients with locally advanced pancreas cancer, splenic preservation techniques, immunology studies, and minimally invasive HPB surgery.
